This list is by no means comprehensive and is by no means all inclusive. This list also is not in any particular order. Each institution listed was suggested to me by a real life college student. Also I tried to only include jobs that would be possibilities for California State University Students.
1. Starbucks- Starbucks Coffee Corporation, you can love it, hate it, blame it for our caffeine addiction, but there is no denying the great benefits for partners (employees). Starbucks offers full medical coverage for any partner that works twenty hours or more a week. They offer paid vacation, personal days, flexible hours, discounts, and stock options. Still in my opinion the two things that really make Starbucks a good place for students is the tuition reimbursement and discount at Barnes and Noble, which sells our textbooks.
2. Target Corporation- This store I have been enamored with for years due to the great selection at low prices but they also offer medical coverage, vacation time, and flexible hours. They also offer tuition reimbursement for their team members (employees). They also offer a wide variety of financial benefits from a 401K to assistance with loans.
3. In-N-Out Burger- This cult favorite not only serves great burgers. In-N-Out offers their associates (employees) vacation time, flexible hours, benefits, and one thing that makes this company extra appealing, a starting wage of$ 10.00 an hour with frequent raises and promotions. This is appealing considering the two mentioned above start at closer to the minimum wage.
4. Our school bookstore- The benefits here are fairly obvious. For one thing they are very flexible when it comes to school schedule. Secondly, there is a discount on those pricey textbooks.
5. Restaurants- Many do not offer the typical benefits but the fact that almost all of these jobs are in the evening leaves time for class. Also these jobs offer an opportunity to make tips which can greatly increase your take home pay. Not to mention a chance to become cultured in your cusine of choice. Again this is a situation in which you really can work as much or as little as you want.
6. Internships- Not really a job that pays you in benefits or money. Still an internship pays very well in experience and creditability when it comes time to get a career. The other benefit is more than likely this type of job is one that interests you as an individual erasing the nagging feeling that you are wasting time.
7. Tutor- This is another job lower in on the pay and benefit scale but high with benefits in time and knowledge. When you tutor you are basically being paid to study keeping your mind sharp and your time mostly free.
8. Wells Fargo- One bank that still seems to have money. This bank offers the medical coverage, vacation time, and 401k many others do. In addition they also start at $10.00 an hour and offer tuition reimbursement. Wells Fargo also offers scholarships to your children-perhaps not relevant to college kids but a good example of the emphasis the company puts on education.
9. A resident advisor- this applies to those that live in the dorms. Benefits include the ability to live on campus for free. Not to mention the minimal work load and the opportunity to socialize on campus.
10. Other on campus jobs- There are a wide range of jobs that one can look into from giving tours to filing in an office to working a desk job. The university works around class schedules and is conveniently located. Not to mention the added benefit that these jobs are easier to obtain because they are specifically designed for the college student. Not to mention CSU Stanaslaus students get first dibs on the on campus jobs that the school has to offer. Applying for work study is just one way to look into this option.
In short making some money while you await the dream job dosn't have to be torture. A job at one of these places or a similar one can be fun. Finding a job you actually enjoy can happen and it can come with some great benefits. The key here is finding a job that works for you, while you work it, even in these tough economic times.
