The US economy is in free fall and many are in a state of panic over what the future might hold. In comes a President who promises change and a "new deal" for America. He promises to change Wall Street and create jobs in the public and private sector through unprecedented government intervention and to make government more transparent. People are still uncertain and scared. Still, the president, with his oratory skills, has given hope and provided millions with hope that a new day may be coming. But not everyone is happy about this ambitious new president.Those on the far right were worried. They felt he was a communist who threatened them and their way of life. They knew they had to do something and do it quick. What was it? To overthrow the American government and implement a "new regime" that would put in place a fascist government and one that would be run by corporate interest. How would they do this? By marching an army of half a million into the capital, led by a great leader who all soldiers respected and who was followed and backed by the financial might of corporate America. Think I'm joking about this?
NO.
It was called the "Business Plot" and its goal was to force President Franklin Roosevelt, through threat of his own life, to relinquish his powers and set-up a new cabinet position called the "Secretary of General Affairs" that would see the day to day operations of the government--and it came VERY close to becoming a reality.
So what stopped it?
