Completion of the much-anticipated Student Recreation Center remains in dispute while student government representatives are looking for ways to compensate students whose $80 fees will be going toward paying for the structure, but may never get the opportunity to use it.

The recreation center is a state-of-the-art building with exercise equipment, showers, lockers and an open court for self-defense lessons, aerobic classes and much more.

During the campaign to pass the funding, students were promised they would pay fees once the building was open for use. However, the building might not be finished in the fall 2008. The exact completion date is disputed, but some have speculated it could be summer 2009.

"Dec. 12, 2008, is unrealistic" said one subcontractor, who spoke freely but asked for anonymity. "I could get fired for anything I say." He declined to speculate when the job would be done. "We just got a report in but it's full of errors."

General contractor McFadden Construction Inc. advised California State University, Stanislaus that its steel subcontractor quit sometime between April 12 and 13, according to an April 25 report from CSU Stanislaus Facilities Services.

The new steel subcontractor will need several months to produce the recreation center's steel frame. The Facilities report ends with concerns that CSU Stanislaus will "most likely be in claims at the end of project."

"Administration has known since January," said an Associated Students Inc. member, who also asked to remain anonymous, when talking about the steel subcontractor dispute.

McFadden declined to answer questions about the project and did not return phone calls.

The steel subcontractor, Innovative Structures of Salida, is in dispute, according to a May 3 Modesto Bee article. As a result the center will be delayed for at least six months.

The new projected completion date is summer 2009, the Bee reported.

This news has angered the ASI representative who believes students should not pay for something they will not have. "Students were misled when they voted."
