For the second straight year California State University, Stanislaus has been named to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.

This award is in recognition of CSU Stanislaus' service opportunities and for the service it has done for the community.

Sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service, the university was one of 14 CSU campuses given the honor out of more than 500 colleges and universities that applied.

CSU Stanislaus has been known for its service to the surrounding community and the availability of programs to students.

"California State University, Stanislaus is demonstrating that it is a leader in the area of community service and civic engagement," CSU Stanislaus President Hamid Shirvani said in a press release.

The university has many clubs and organizations that take pride in their community service. Every Wednesday is a showcase of clubs and organizations available to students.

"I think they (CSU Stanislaus) do a pretty good job," sophomore Kassandra Fischer said. "I see the clubs in the quad on Wednesdays. Most of the people I've met are involved in something."

The most visible aspect of the quad is the sororities and fraternities that are seen daily in the center of campus.

"We participate in many, what we call, philanthropic events," Alpha Xi Delta Chapter President Melissa Vieira said. "For example, every October, we put on a Halloween Carnival for children … we also have several teddy bear drives and donate the teddy bears collected to local children's hospitals."

Beyond the club and organization aspect, much of the traditionally educational courses are involved in community service.

More than 50 of the fall semester classes incorporate service learning. More than 2,000 students and 30,000 hours of service have been a part of the service learning component incorporated into courses.

Much of this has been due to the coordination on the CSU Stanislaus Office of Service Learning.
