This past Monday, May 19, Main Dining at California State University, Stanislaus was bustling with students looking to cast their vote for next year's Associated Students Incorporated Vice President Internal.
If you thought elections were already held for all ASI representative positions, you are correct, but the position for VP Internal was not made official then due to disagreement on the ballot count. A run off vote was conducted to determine the official Vice President Internal.
The Run-Off Election unofficial reasults were; Kristina Rathers 162 votes, and Tarah McComak 132 votes.
The day after the Run-Off Election ASI met for thier final senate meeting for the 2007-2008 school year. On the agenda for that day, among other things, was the vote to approve the unofficial winner of the Run-Off Election.
Senate did not approve the Run-Off results with a 0-7-2 vote and therefore the VP Internal position remains vacant. ASI President Andrew Janz reserves the right to nomiate any student for the position and then the senate has the right to approve his nomination.
As is synonymous with elections, controversy arose during the course of this lenghty election process.
The start of the VP Internal controversy occurred when the unofficial results from the ASI election showed a tally so close that a recount was conducted. The four candidates running for VP Internal initial vote totals were: Tarah McComak 181, Kristina rather 176, Bailey Mobley 148, Mehran Khodabandeh 113, according to ASI office assistant Heather Walker. At this point Rathers asked for a hand recount.
"I wanted a recount because machines can easily miscount and it was completely within my rights to ask for that," Rathers said.
A recount was completed but it came back with the exact same results. Rathers asked for a recount to be done by hand but was denied, so she filed an appeal to the Appellate Committee. It was then determined that no one person could be announced as the majority winner of the vote due to a bylaw discrepancy.
