The defending West Region champions California State University, Stanislaus were eliminated over the weekend from the regional championship tournament, putting an abrupt end to a roller coaster season for the softball team.
After going undefeated in the California Collegiate Athletic Association tournament and claiming their first ever conference championship, CSU Stanislaus entered the regional championship as a number two seed.
In the first game of the tournament, Jessica Gaumnitz pitched a two hit shutout against Seattle University, and the Warriors easily won the game 4-0, thanks in part to a two run home run by Jessica Scholl.
The No. 18 nationally ranked Warriors then went on to face Western Oregon in their next game, but were not able to keep extend their five game winning streak. The Warriors only managed six hits and no runs against Seattle's pitcher Katie Fleer, who improved her record to 20-5. Jennifer Arnold took the loss, and finished the season with a record of 13-12
The loss was the first loss in 19 games on the road for the Warriors.
In the win or go home game the following day, CSU Stanislaus faced off against the #8 ranked team in the nation, Humboldt State University. After the Warriors scored two runs in the first inning, HSU responded with two of their own in the fourth. With the score tied after seven innings, Gaumnitz remained in the game to pitch the eighth, but was unable to keep the HSU bats quiet any longer.
Geneva Perrine hit a grand slam, the first home run of her collegiate career, to give HSU a four run lead. Nikki Ketteringham also hit a home run for HSU, and the Warriors ultimately lost 9-2, thus ending their season.
Although Gaumnitz gave up nine runs, only five of them were earned. In the final two games, in which CSU Stanislaus got outscored 13-2, the Warriors committed an uncharacteristic eight errors.
The CSU Stanislaus softball team ends its season with a 31-23 record, along with the CCAA title.
Megan Franksen landed on the NFCA All-West Region First Team, while Gaumnitz and Alyssa Guzman made the NFCA All-West Region Second Team.
Franksen, Guzman, and Gaumnitz also made the Daktronics/CoSIDA All-West Region First team, while Jennifer Arnold made the Daktronics/CoSIDA All-West Region Second team.
