According to the University Library strategic goals of student learning, "the Warrior Book Collection Contest exists to reward and encourage the appreciation of books, scholarly research, and student writing skills." The contest promoted these skills by requiring contestants to submit a list of 25 books, research their history and then write an essay about how those books affected their lives.
The incentives for students to participate were the cash prizes. First place received $300, second place received $200 and third place received $100.
First place winner C. Anne Engert,, an English major from Oakdale, titled her collection the "New Me" and incorporated texts discussing subjects such as psychology and mind control, oppressive nations, and themes of loyalty. The judges found Engert's essay "persuasive, moving, and thoughtful."
Regarding her collection Engert states that they taught her "some corner of the human experience that I needed to see when I reached a terrible and thrilling crossroads in my life."
Second place winner Maria K. Gasaway won judges over with her "Swiss Family Robinson" collection and third place contestant Abby Peretz showcased her "Fantasy Literature" collection which consisted of a worn out copy of "The Fellowship of the Ring", the "Forgotten Realms" novels and many other pieces of classic fantasy literature.
