Fraternity Chi Delta Beta is hosting a Battle of the Bands for Cans event at 7 p.m. Friday, May 16, in the Event Center.
Four local bands will be performing live and the "entrance fee" for students to attend is canned goods. The event will be like any other battle of the bands, but rather than voting through applause, viewers must put canned goods in the boxes pertaining to the band they wish to see win.
The band that receives the most canned goods in their box by the end of the night, wins the competition. In between band setups, audience members will be able to play the video game "Rock Band."
The featured bands are Inner Soapbox from Modesto, the Mustaches from Modesto-Turlock, the Thunder Cats and Under the Mat. The Thunder Cats are made up of members from the fraternity that formed a band specifically for this event and to have fun. Chi Delta Beta President Benjamin Sierra is a member of Under the Mat.
The idea for the event came from Chris Scott, member of the Day of Hope, which gives Thanksgiving baskets to the homeless every year. Originally Scott wanted to have an event similar to the Union Program Board's Java Jams and asked the men of Chi Delta Beta to help.
Sierra said they decided to make it an even bigger event than Java Jams and thus the idea for a battle of the bands was formed. All cans collected at the event will be given to Day of Hope who will then donate it to the homeless in the Turlock community.
"Depending on resources, we'd like to do this event once or twice each academic year," said Sierra who hopes to make it an annual event.
Another community service event Chi Delta Beta has hosted this spring semester is Support Chi's for GIs.
"We collected about 150 pounds of goods to send to a battalion overseas," Sierra said, "[items] ranged from gummy bears to sunscreen to portable fans."
The event the fraternity plans to focus on more in the following fall semester is Manmeet Week. Manmeet Singh was a member who was killed after being hit by a drunk driver in 2004.
Since then, the fraternity has hosted a week in November dedicated to alcohol awareness in Singh's remembrance.
Chi Delta Beta is a regional fraternity with two other active chapters at CSU campuses in Fresno and Northridge.
