Many California State University, Stanislaus seniors are counting down the days this month and are beginning to feel that last semester itch as their commencement ceremony approaches.

Caps and gowns are being purchased and the vision of walking down that platform, receiving their diplomas is slowly coming into a reality.

Since last spring, CSU Stanislaus has split its commencement ceremonies into two days due to the large number of graduates for each department. This year, the first commencement ceremony will take place at 8 a.m. Friday, May 30, for the college of Humanities and Social Sciences, college of Human and Health Sciences, and college of the Arts.

The second commencement will take place at 8 a.m. the following day, May 31, for the colleges of Education, Natural Sciences and Business Administration.

Graduates are encouraged to attend as well as to invite their families and friends. Senior economics major Maria Regalado is anxiously waiting for graduation as she becomes the first in her family to graduate from college and ready to step into the real world.

"After I graduate from Stanislaus, I have many objectives for the next five years," Regalado said. "I am an economics major with a minor in speech communication and my objective in life is to ultimately become a financial consultant. So now that graduation is coming up I plan to attend CSU San Jose in the fall and work on my masters in communication, specifically in public relations."

Regalado admits that she was skeptical coming to a local university, only 20 minutes away from her hometown of Crows Landing, but she grew to love CSU Stanislaus.

"Stanislaus has had a lot to offer, the biggest one being their tuition rates compared to other schools and other services they provide," Regalado said. "However, it was more of my department and the faculty that have helped me shape my future and enhance my education because I have developed a stronger relationship with them because of their size, relative to any other department or organization on campus."

Personalized items for graduation such as announcements, diploma frames, caps and gowns, graduation rings, etc. can be purchased at the university's Kiva Bookstore.

Guest seating for the ceremony will be on a first-come basis at the University Ampitheatre. For those who want to avoid the heat and sun all together, the ceremony will be broadcast inside the Flora and Bernell Snider Recital Hall, located next to the ampitheatre. Free parking will also be provided for guests throughout the campus parking lots.

Professional photographs will be taken of graduates walking on stage, receiving their diplomas by Chappell Studios Inc. Photos will be available for purchase one week after the ceremony to graduates by mail.
