"I like a burger to have a good deal of pink in it, but if it's going out to the public I let it get more thoroughly done," said Scott Davis, stepping out of his role as English professor and into that of grill chef.

Davis will be among those manning the grills as the English Department hosts its annual Spring Student Appreciation Picnic on May 16 at the Faculty Development Center courtyard.

"It's a time for students to visit with faculty on a more informal, social level and build fellowship," said Tula Mattingly, coordinator of administrative support.

The picnic will be held from 4 to 6:30 p.m. on Friday to allow the greatest number of students to attend, and all students who are or are interested in being English majors are encouraged to come.

The picnics average between 40 and 60 people attending, Mattingly said.

The English Department supplies hamburgers, veggie burgers, hotdogs and soft drinks. Davis, assisted by Arnold Webb, has recently been in charge of grilling the burgers and hotdogs.

Students are not required to bring anything, though they may bring a dish that does not require refrigeration if they choose. Students are also invited to bring their children and their family, Mattingly said.

At past picnics, students and faculty have brought side dishes such as Aram sandwiches, spicy chicken wings, pesto dip, exotic salads, and rich desserts, Carroll said.

Twelve years ago, the English Department provided a keg of St. Stan's beer, but abandoned the practice due to underage drinking, Carroll said.

While providing free food, the picnic also provides students a chance to see the human side of their professors. It also allows professors to get more insight into their students' lives, Tony Perrello said.

The English Department has always had a strong sense of "community," and these picnics really help to maintain that sense of community, especially since it is held twice a year, Steve Stryker said.
