"Another week goes by and we have moved up another spot in the rankings and I could not be more proud."
Coach Jan Schefkowitz, head coach of California State University, Stanislaus' softball team (27-21, 20-12 CCAA) glows with happiness as she brags about her team. "I am so excited and am so happy for my team. I know that there is still a week or so left but I am so thrilled to have the players that I have this season," Schefkowitz said.
CSU Stanislaus softball plays the California State University, San Bernardino Coyotes in Humboldt in the first round of the California Collegiate Athletic Association tournament this week.
After a hectic regular season, the four playoff teams taken to the CCAA tournament in Arcata, Calif., are the No. 1 seed Humboldt State Lumberjacks (47-15, 24-8 CCAA), the No. 2 Warriors, the No. 3 CSU San Bernardino Coyotes (37-28-1, 17-13 CCAA) and the No. 4 California State University, Monterey Bay Otters (34-22, 18-14).
"As a coach for 16 years for Cal State Stanislaus I have had my ups and downs with different teams but this season is a definite 'up' season," Schefkowitz said. "I love my team this season and am really excited to play San Bernardino this weekend."
Last year Schefkowitz led the team to a whole new level. The softball Warriors won the NCAA West Region Championship and then advanced to the NCAA National Championship Tournament for the first time in Stanislaus softball history.
"Our team this season is a much different team than last year, we have new players and different attitudes," assistant coach Paul Cavan said.
"Some of our goals this season were to communicate on the field, give maximum effort, help one another with achieving individual goals and encouraging one another to be the best that we can be," said Jennifer Arnold, a sophomore liberal studies major.
Overall, Arnold believes that she and her teammates achieved these goals and has gone really far into the season with a great record.
Teammate, Alicia Reid, sophomore, said she is excited to be a part of the CSU Stanislaus softball team. Reid played basketball last year and was ready for a change. She is a starter on the field at second base.
"This is my sixth season on the softball Warriors coaching staff and I am honored to be apart of this great staff," Cavan said.
"Our players are mentally ready for San Bernardino and they will play their hearts out," Cavan said. "I have full faith in my players for this weekend. I know that they will succeed in the game and be fully aware of what is happening in and off the field."
The Warriors are set to take on the CSU San Bernardino Coyotes on Thursday, May 1 in the first round of the CCAA Tournament, as they officially defend their Western regional crown.
