A newly appointed dean of the College of Education at California State University, Stanislaus will take over in July.

Ruth Fassinger is set to take over. Fassinger is a professor of psychology and interim chair of the Department of Counseling and Personnel Services at the University of Maryland, College Park.

The current dean of education, Carl Brown, will retire at the end of the academic year.

"He is leaving the department in good condition," Don Hansen, public affairs specialist for CSU Stanislaus, said.

Hansen also indicated that there is excitement within the college due to the appointment, but no plans have been made to make any changes within the college.

"The curriculum, requirements, etc. won't be affected by her appointment. However, Dr. Fassinger will certainly bring us some new ideas and perspectives that will no doubt bring further distinction and enhancements to the College of Education," William Covino, CSU Stanislaus provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, said.

Fassinger comes with 20 years of experience from being a part of the faculty and administration at the University of Maryland's College of Education.

"As for changes, it would be foolish of me to think about those possibilities without being there for awhile and knowing what faculty think needs to happen to enhance the experience of students," Fassinger said.

Fassinger has experience assessing student and faculty needs with her Ph.D. in psychology and her work in a small therapy and consulting practice focused on gender, sexuality and work.

Her other accomplishments include a master's degree in English, 10 years as a public school teacher and division president of the American Psychological Association.

She has held previous positions as director of the College of Education's undergraduate Honors Program at the University of Maryland and as a staff psychologist at Arizona State University and the University of California Santa Barbara.

Fassinger said she is eager to add her new position to the list of accomplishments.

"I look forward very eagerly to serving as dean," she said.
