Stanislaus County is number one for car thefts this year.

Although the year has just started, Stanislaus County is reported to be the number one car theft county in the United States per capita reported by National Insurance Crime Bureau.

For three years, Stanislaus County has been the number one spot for car thefts. Last year, it fell from first to third place. Now this year, it went back up to first. In Stanislaus County, it has been reported that 1,048 cars are stolen per 100,000 people while 1,036 cars are stolen per 100,000 people in Las Vegas reported by NICB.

Last year on campus, only four cars were stolen, in comparison to 2006 when 14 cars were reported stolen to the Campus Police. Ninety percent of all cars that are stolen are recovered but, most cars are sold for parts, reported by the California Highway Patrol.

Most cars that are stolen are usually left unlock or had keys left in them. But there are many ways to protect your car from getting broken into and sold for parts.

You should always park under a light or near other cars. Have a car alarm installed in your car or buy a club lock for your steering wheel. If you have a removable mount for your music, remove it and take it with you when you leave your car.

Having OnStar service can help find your car if it is stolen. The compact can trace your car and return it to you faster.

Even on a small campus like California States University, Stanislaus, crime can happen but you can protect yourself with a little help.
