The Union Program Board last week opened its doors once again to welcome Stephanie Meyer and Thomas Huerta to Java Jams.
The Java Jams show took place from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 10, in the Carol Burke Student Lounge.
This was the fourth time Meyer has preformed in Java Jams and the second time for Huerta. Last year in the Java Jam off, a contest for all participants in Java jams during the 2006-07 school year, Meyer won first place and a check for $250.
Both Meyer and Huerta play the guitar. Meyer's focus is on rhythm and Huerta is lead.
Meyer and Huerta have been performing together since 2005 when they first met in high school through mutual friends. Not only do they perform together at Java Jams, but also 7 p.m. every Sunday at Queen Bean's in Modesto.
Meyer still enjoys performing at Java Jams most. "My favorite part is seeing friends and familiar faces," she said.
Huerta likes playing shows on campus because it provides a good attraction for students and is easy to catch people passsing by.
Meyer and Huerta practice together about three times a week. "Just last week while we were practicing in the Pergola, some students came by to listen and talk," she said.
Music is a hobby and a passion for both Meyer and Huerta but both are pursuing majors in different directions.
Meyer is a junior at California State University, Stanislaus, majoring in Biology with a minor in Chemistry. She hopes to use her degree to become a teacher or maybe work somewhere fun like Sea World.
Huerta is a sophomore at CSU Stanislaus majoring in English with a minor in Music.
"All I do in my spare time is play music pretty much," Huerta said, "I really like to focus on the lyrical and poetic aspect of the music."
If you missed Meyer and Huerta's performance last week, you can still listen to their music on MySpace. Visit www.myspace.com/stephaniemeyermusic for Meyer's music and www.myspace.com/maxwolfsuit for Huerta's music.
The next Java Jam will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. April 24 in the Carol Burke Lounge. The featured performer will be Ben Sierra.
Last year Java Jam concerts were held in Mom's café, but have since been moved to the Carol Burke Lounge. All Java Jam shows are free and provide refreshments and snacks for free.
UPB Facilities Program Coordinator Maria Smith said: "Although Java Jams worked well in Mom's café my job is to bring students into the Union and the Carol Burke Lounge is part of the union, and I have been very satisfied with the turnout in the Carol Burke lounge."
For information on Java Jams, contact Smith or stop by the UPB office in the University Student Union.
