"These violent delights have violent ends, like fire and powder, which as they kiss consume." These are the opening words of the much anticipated second installment of the Twilight Saga: "New Moon." These words come from the famous love story, "Romeo and Juliet." Any Twilight fan will tell you that the romance between Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) is one that can rival even the greatest of love stories. The romance between mortal and vampire soars to a new level as Bella Swan delves deeper into the mysteries of the supernatural world she yearns to become part of.
"New Moon" continues where the first "Twilight" film left off. Bella is a quiet, high school senior who is in love with vampire Edward. After a birthday mishap where Edward's brother, Jasper, tries to kill Bella after she gets a paper cut, Edward leaves her, claiming he does not want her anymore and his family is too dangerous for her to be around.
For any girl who has ever had a broken heart, the sadness and depression that Bella spirals into is one that most can relate to.
Edward and the Cullens move away from Forks, but not without making Bella the promise that she will never, ever see him again. For months, Bella wastes away, heartbroken over the loss of her one true love. But when her dad threatens to send her back to live with her mom, Bella makes an effort to forget the past.
While shopping in town, she sees a group of familiar thugs that put her in danger in Twilight. This is when she sees Edward. It is just a mere hologram of her consciousness. When Edward left Bella he made her promise to not do anything reckless, but if recklessness is what it takes to see him, even a hallucination is better than no Edward at all.
So Bella looks for more ways to endanger her life. She turns to her friend Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner) to help her restore an old bike, a reckless tool that will spark her hallucinations. Over time, Bella and Jacob form a strong bond. Jacob falls in love with her, but Bella's broken heart always keeps her just out of reach. Bella admits to using him because she does not want to be alone, but Jacob is unscathed and makes her a promise; he will never hurt her.
Soon, Jacob changes into a werewolf. The werewolf trait is one that can become dormant in the Indian Quileute tribe, but since the vampires have been around, the trait has been sparked back to life.
Jacob and his pack try to protect Forks from the vicious vampires who have returned to take revenge on the Cullen family. And their means of revenge? Kill Bella.
Throughout the movie Bella's recklessness becomes increasingly more dangerous. She ends up going cliff diving, but when Edward's future-seeing sister, Alice (Ashley Greene) does not see Jacob rescue her, Edward decided he wants to die too because he can not live in a world where Bella does not exist.
He goes to Volterra, Italy with the intention of getting himself killed by the Volturi. The Volturi are the oldest, most powerful group of vampires with very special abilities. Jane (Dakota Fanning) has the power to inflict agonizing pain on anyone just by looking at him or her. The catch: Bella is immune to all these powers.
Without going on to spoil the movie, lets just say there are two more movies that still have to be told. What began as an irresistible love story has transformed into a star-crossed love triangle.
"New Moon" explores the powers of love and loss. Kristen Stewart captures Bella's confusing struggle as she falls in love with two people at once. Taylor Lautner, along with his rock hard abs, takes a starring in the film, and he does a fantastic job playing the part.
For all those on Team Edward, you may have a change of heart after watching "New Moon." I would recommend this movie to anyone that has ever been in love, lost someone they loved, or had to choose between a friend and a boyfriend or girlfriend.
Guys, there plenty of big bad wolves and fight scenes to get you through taking your girlfriend who will appreciate the shirtless Edward and Jacob. The ending of "New Moon" will leave non-readers dying to know what happens in "Eclipse," the third installment that hits theatres June 30, 2010.
My recommendation, read the books!
